Just an observation - school events and their BBQ's cause health risk

Every year most primary, junior and infant schools have a summer fete, with various attractions the school aims to raise money to go towards the schools fundraiser to, well, we hope buy new equipment for the children such as computers and sports equipment...however too often do we see these funds slip into the hands of some teachers or PTA members. But that's another story for another time.
Now, at most of these school events the school runs the hot food, in which the profits go towards the fundraiser, but what are the expenses? I am not talking money, but our health!

So, Roberts Ices have been attending these events and making some observations.

Lets start at the beginning, three maybe four teachers or PTA are put in charge of e BBQ, now, individually do they have any knowledge or practices in handling food fit for public? Do they have the required level 2 grade in food safety and hygiene? I doubt it very much.
So I attended a primary school earlier in the year, for the school's protection I will not name the school.

I watched three men begin building three barbecues, old and very dirty looking ones that it wouldn't surprise me if this was the first time being used in a good year or more. So after being covered in dirt and old grease the men decide the BBQ is built fine, they pour the coals in, light up and use the time to have a chat. Whilst this is occurring, two ladies set up the serving area (two tables from the school put together) now, they have put blue gloves on, looks good right? Did you know that wearing gloves does not make you instantly sanitary and in fact temps wearers into not washing their hands. I witnessed these ladies cut rolls, then touch utensils, then organise the bin, touch various other things, organise their till and float, then handle the rolls again. Already the contamination is high, not to mention that the rolls and other food are left open to the elements without being covered.
So the men are soon happy the barbecue is hot enough and the food is brought out from the school, I remind you that nobody has washed their hands. The food then sat in the sun for a good 40 minutes before being cooked, can you imagine he bacteria which would grow on it in that time?
So with the hands which have touched an old dirty barbecue are god only knows what else are now touching burgers and sausages which your children will eat!

I'd like to now mention, that in catering, certain laws are in place, and these laws are not met by these schools and their barbecues, simple things like running hot and cold water and hand washing facilities. Not once did these any of these teachers wash their hands. Even simple certification and documentation is not in place. Which other traders look at and wonder why we have to follow these strict rules when these barbecues go and endanger the public without anyone questioning their methods. Of course we at Roberts ices, enjoy and love upholding proper hygiene standard and invite authorities to inspect our catering units.

As I watched the barbecue continue again these gloved hands went everywhere, touching money, which is always dirty, shaking hands when friends arrive, handling the bin and then fresh food. These teachers are putting us all in danger! Why do the councils not stamp down on these barbecues and put hygiene rules in place for the schools as well as us traders.
Even having some self drying hand sanitizer would be a step in the right direction.

My next point is that these barbecues are all run by supermarket bought product, which in law you are not meant to sell to the public for profit, products are meant to be bought from proper wholesale. This occurs with cold drinks also in these schools, where us traders are forced to purchase from wholesale for food and drink...where is the fair business act?

So next time you attend a school fete I ask you to look, look at who is serving your food, take a step out of the box and watch. Look for hygiene it's important. Don't let these schools get away with poor food standards and give you low quality food.

Favourite product 2013!

So here we are, the contest has only just opened and oh boy if you could have witnessed what I have, luckily our opening weekend of the favourite product competition was a bank holiday one, ensuring plenty of customers to indulge from the wide range Roberts ice cream vans offer. We have seen an outstanding example of the year ahead of us, with some products instantly on top spots and some which have hardly taken off...but there is plenty of time for things to change!

Before we reveal the top products so far and of course the all important number one so far, a little update on what else is hot and...sauces. Mind the bad joke, but its true, Roberts ices have introduced a fabulous new range of exciting sauces. So new this year we will also be finding which sauces are the most loved! The exciement seems never ending!
New sauces included Vimto! Black Jack! Turkish Delight! Mango! Cola! And more...
Of course as expected all of Roberts Customers have been mind blown by the variety and choice offered. With the new sauces and previous flavours included Roberts Ices now offer 20 sauce flavours to top your ice creams with.
So, it's about time we listed the top current 5 sauces.
In 5th place we have.......strawberry!
In 4th place we have.......Vimto!
In 3rd place we have.......mango!
In 2nd place we have......chocolate!

A classic such as bubblegum is hard to beat but remember the 2013 contest has only just begun. We will bring you further updates of sauces later.

So for the main event! Favourite product 2013 brought to you by Roberts ice cream van hire.
After watching closely over the bank holiday weekend we have discovers our previous champion the Marshmallow cone, has slipped! Sales of this before favourite are yet to reach near top spot.
It has been close between three products so far, two established products on the window boards and one of which is a special Robert put on the counter top, so here we go!

In third place we have.... The Caribbean Twist! A newly introduced product which caught on and has raced into a strong start, coconut ice cream and mango sauce, a combination much loved, by a female audience, why we will never truly know but it seems to be a girls temptation.

In second place we have....... The bubblegum cone! Delicious and beautiful to look at. Bright blue ice cream with a turn your tongue blue ending, on a golden crisp cone it's becoming a favourite for children and adults alike. A massive competitor for 2012 sees the opening of this year to an amazing start.

In first place for favourite product 2013 so far is... The single with a flake. You can beat a classic and you can't fake a flake, Roberts ices are proud to serve authentic Cadburys flakes in their ice creams. After the bank holiday weekend this is the product, this is what the people have been wanting from our vans, seeing as Roberts have been on big events the last week and longer its no surprise really this is what sells at events, simple classics

And there you have it, we have only just begun and we already have three clear leaders, leaving the lemon ice cone in 4th place and at the very bottom, the apple cider lolly. Who knows what will come and what product will fight its way up to become champion of 2013. Will our last years winner make a quick recovery? Stay reading and find out!

Favourite product 2013 - it's back!

Ladies, Gentlemen boys and girls, welcome to this years favourite product of the year award. In 2012 we witnessed a thrilling race between a few hot favourites, and I predict 2013, to be even closer.

Yes that's right, last year was won just by the Marshamllow cone, for those who may not remember its a particular favourite...a crisp golden cone topped with fresh whippy ice cream and then rolled in colourful fluffy marshmallows. A favourite for children and adults alike. 2012 saw a positive start for our victor, sales were higher than other products day in day out. Then we reached event season and before we knew it two main competitors were back hot on the tail of the Marshmallow cone. A close competition and we all thought the bubblegum cone would clutch the 1st spot and in a last push the marshmallow snatched it.

2013 sees a repeat from the popular window displays of 2012, popular demand has kept the products from changing...or so we thought!
In a twist to tangle things up a few new and already popular products have been introduced, including

The Caribbean Twist - a large tub with mango and pineapple sauce complimenting coconut ice cream

Choco-orange delight - a knickerbocker glory with a chocolate and orange blast, chocolate dust and of course real Cadbury flake

Creme egg cone - a golden cone with fresh whippy ice cream, squashed into a half egg shape filled with gooey creme egg sauce and chocolate dust, the end result looks like a Cadburys creme egg bitten in half. Yum yum!

Of course we see the return of some classic favourites, the bubblegum cone, bunnies ears, the hedgehog cone and not forgetting the chocolate knickerbocker glory. All of which, have more than enough chance to claim that prize of favourite product 2013!
The '99' cone or single with a flake, we all know as the ice cream to have, it's classic, it's an ice cream not too adventurous but still great tasting, an ice cream any generation can enjoy, probably the most famous ice cream of Britain as a whole, everybody knows it, enjoys it and craves it. It's only with Roberts ice cream vans bringing new and wild choices that this before champion found its up against some strong opponents.

So nothing now remains but to open that serving window, let the ice creams sell and before long we will discover the favourite product of 2013! Stay reading and stay up to date, because now as of this year you the readers can vote for your favourite products of all time. Get in touch let us know what really makes your summer dessert worth talking about.

Coming up next time on the favourite product 2013

. The competition is open, find out the results from the very beginning
. New favourite to win? Maybe our current cha, pion has met it's match?

Robert's Ices say "Slap it on the plastic"

2013 brings a new year and new changes, for some its a change in lifestyle but for us at Robert's ice cream vans it's something a little more futuristic.
After a successful meeting last week the company can announce they will be taking debit and credit card payments on all vans!
Most likely the first ice cream company to venture into this experiment, Robert hopes this will make customers find paying for ice cream easier and simpler but also, ensuring poor old dad doesn't miss out!

Using the most modern hand held card machines, which for speed, can amazingly connect to all phone networks so there will be no delays in paying. Company director Robert was concerned to begin with about card payments slowing down service speed, but Robert was delighted that technology can avoid this and keep all customers happy.

Behind the scenes of the Ice Cream Man.

The Ice Cream man, the figure who serves whippy ice cream from a Van that plays a happy tune. Always has a smile and in some case (like me) can talk forever!
But what most people forget, is that The Ice cream man is still a working citizen. A man trying to run a business in a tough industry in a country which isn't doing him much favors.
This is what I ask you, the public to remember, that running an Ice Cream Van is no easy task, its a job we do everyday of the week, even if were not on the streets, we are at events, or in the office. there is no such thing as a day off when running your own business.

Many people have mixed views about us ice Cream traders but don't forget this is our only income, its what we do and who we are. Its not a hobby its a way of life, and if we do not do it, we don't have food on the table. Everything is currently against our trade, all because a few bad traders have to spoil the good name of the Ice Cream man. Most of us are good, clean and proper. Even the council's work against us. Did you know Ice Cream Vans are being banned from Parks, fields, council estates, schools, and now even named roads. How they expect us to sell Ice Cream I don't know, especially now we have more laws about times we can trade and how often our chimes can ring...and what volume! The Ice Cream industry is not an easy one and with the 2012 London (LEZ) emission Zone even more Ice Cream vans will go out of business.

So next time the Ice Cream Van is round your way, remember, this is someone career, and if they run a good van and deserve it, don't worry about spending a pound or two. I know times are hard for us all, but small businesses like the Ice Cream Van are what is keeping Britain on its feet. We are trying our best to serve what is now a rare treat, soft serve whippy ice cream which can be found only in a few places, and it something that all ages love and have done for many many years.

Ice Cream Men are real people running a honest difficult career.

How To Know Who To Hire

Ice Cream Van Hire can be a tricky thing to get organised, with many Ice Cream Vans trying to cover one area and so many competitors, how do you know who you can trust? There are a few ways you, as the client, can tell if your hiring a good Ice Cream Van, and the first part is your personal impression, is the person your dealing with friendly, professional, clean, do you feel you as a person could trust them. This is the first step, but of course there is a lot more to it than just that.

Here at Roberts Ices we have something many do not, we have an official booking system. so what does this mean? This means when you make a booking with us, we will not let you down. We are proud to say we have never let a customer down, we send out written confirmations. We send you legal confirmation saying that the date and time you have requested is yours in our calendar. It pains us how many unprofessional Ice Cream Companies are out there who are letting people down day after day, but here at Roberts Ices we are different, we are professional and reliable.

Another major part of choosing your Ice Cream Van is checking up to date licences, hygiene certificates, public liability insurance, trading licence, HASAP and risk assessment. If an Ice Cream company does not have these, then do not book with them because you don't know what your in for. It is always better to go legal and professional. Roberts Ice Cream Van Hire holds all the mentioned above and more, for your peace of mind.

Products. Another key part in choosing an Ice Cream company. lets be honest why should anyone put up with a low quality ice cream van which serves only a few whippy products, wheres the fun and enjoyment in that!?
We know of poor Ice Cream Vans who have minimal products, do not serve anything as far as toppings....How can someone call themselves an Ice Cream company and not have sprinkles. This make me sad how so wrong some people are treating this industry. At Roberts Ice Cream Van Hire we have vast products (See our products page for more details) from fresh whippy served in various types of cones and other edible containers as well as many tubs and other forms of non-edible containers. We think visiting an Ice Cream van should be a great experience and we have a product for everyone, luxury adult products to child friendly inventions .

Also, be sure to check your value for money. Remember this, with the ice cream industry you pay for what you get. If you want to go with a really cheap quote then the Van and Ice Creams will not be to your satisfaction, the higher quotes are always the more value for money in the long run. Quality comes with the price, so don't settle for second best.

Here at Roberts Ices we are proud of who we are and what we do. we know we will make your event, wedding or whatever it may be, a bit more special. We have many years experience, and we promise you not only a professional friendly service, but the best quality Ice Creams and of course your Value for money. Speak to us today to discuss your event

Ice Cream Van Hire Latest News. Truth about the Business and Industry

Looking for an Ice Cream Van? Lets be honest, everyone knows how terrible certain ice cream vans can be, many do not hold any licence, hygiene certificates or anything of the sort. Too many cow-boy ice cream traders are at large harming this industry and destroying the good reputation us quality Ice Cream Vans build. Too often we are rescuing worried brides and grooms because an unprofessional ice cream trader has let them down last minute, how some traders can do that to a wedding, someones special day, I don't know.

Many people believe that with an Ice Cream Van its just "jump in and go" well I'm here to tell those people that is far from the truth. Dealing with fresh product everyday is a challenge in its own, handling fresh whippy, cones to even bread rolls for hot dogs. Everything has to be monitored, temperature checked and of course CLEAN.
Everyday Our Ice Cream Vans are cleaned from floor to ceiling, inside fridges, whippy machines and everything inside the vans. We run our vans like a professional kitchen should, efficient, clean and properly.

At Roberts Ices we believe in supplying only the very best, legal and safe Ice Cream. Which is what we think every Ice Cream Van should be doing. Many times our customers have come to our vans to tell us about other ice cream vans they have seen and the filthy habits these vans have, which makes us sad that this is happening.
The ice Cream Van has always been a positive place to be, child friendly, and a happy safe environment. Unfortunately this is not the case with many other companies and they know who they are.
But please remember we are not all the same, there are some very good Ice Cream Van Hire Companies out there still and Roberts Ices are proud to be one of them.

Many may frown upon what I am about to say but I am not afraid to speak my mind. The highest percentage of The Ice cream Industry is now owned by foreigners, immigrants who have come to England looking for easy work. This is where things go horribly wrong and hygiene laws are broken and Ice Cream Vans and the industry is frowned upon. Many customers say they would like to be served by someone who can actually speak English, now, I am not blaming the industries fall upon the foreigners there are many reasons why Ice Cream Vans can be an uneasy place to visit especially in London. I also know for a fact that there are many foreigners in our country who have done a fantastic job both in the Ice Cream Trade and others and they too know who they are and I am proud to be friendly with these companies.

Many years ago Ice Cream was much different, but our industry has to move with the times as much as any other, prices of our ingredients go up and up every year and now supermarkets have decided to try and kill us off too. Please, many of us are good people and run good Ice Cream Vans, understand we cannot do our lollies at prices the same as supermarkets because its impossible for us. The Price of Milk and Sugar also means Whippy is far more expensive that ever before so to carry on serving this rare and tasty treat, we need to charge for it. OK, many companies again in London or the coast will try to totally rip you off and this is when yes you shouldn't have to pay stupid prices. Us normal Ice Cream Traders will give you the best prices we can but remember this, we too have families to feed, houses to keep and lives to live. This is OUR living and income its all we have.

Roberts Ices would like to assure customers and everyone else we do run a top of the range company we have more than the required certificates and licences. We serves fresh food everyday and at good prices. We love this industry, help us love it for what it should be.

ARTICLE. 2012 London Emission Zone (LEZ): The affect on Vehicles and Businesses

In 2008 the Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) was launched, the target, to provide cleaner air for London. Pollution can cause dramatic health affects and even though London’s air is improving, 2012 sees a massive step into improving the pollution problem even further. ‘LEZ’ has been targeted mainly at the roads, and what better way to control people and their vehicles, the old fashioned Penalty Fine. A genius scheme to decrease pollution and most of all, take people’s money. Well as of January 2012 this gets worse, the new emissions Zone is in and it is bigger and angrier than before.
3rd of January is when the beginning of the end starts for many companies and residence with mini buses, Lorries, vans and larger vehicles older than 2002. Those accepted must contain Euro 3 engines.  It goes to the ridiculous extent that even road gritters, fire engines, snow ploughs and recovery vehicles. Where does the madness end? So if a house is burning down and people’s lives are at risk, can’t older fire engine go out to save them without receiving a large fine? Could it be that extreme?
Today, we took to the streets and instead of interviewing lorry drivers or salt gritters we chose to find a small business and get their point of view and find out just how hard this emission Zone increase has affected them. So who better to choose than the third most loved thing is Britain...The Ice Cream Vans.
The first ice cream vans appeared in the thirties, by the sixties there were over 20,000 ice cream vans ringing their chimes and serving traditional soft serve whippy ice cream we still love today. But after high fuel costs, increase prices on sugar and milk, and the emission zone have brought that healthy number down to only 5,000. This for an industry as a whole is catastrophic and it hasn’t stopped yet.

We all remember ice cream vans from our childhoods, the uncontrollable excitement when we heard the chimes and would pester mum for money. But for how much longer will those chimes continue to ring? With councils enforcing very strict rules on Ice Cream vans is what is forcing many out of their jobs. Limits on chimes which can only be played for seconds and can’t be replayed for minutes longer, a volume limit too is in place and no chimes after certain times. This varies on each council.  With all these Playstations and Xbox consoles, how can ice creams vans expect to be heard over those when their chimes are forced to be short and quiet? Ice cream vans which are accepted are those with the Euro 3 engine but those who own Ford Vans need to do their research as Ford begun using these euro 3 engines earlier than others. The first Euro 5 engine Ice Cream Van was built this year By Whitby Morrison.
Ice Cream Vans are now being banned from parks, fields, schools and even now council estates. It’s no wonder many struggle to keep the business open.
So what of the classic ice cream vans, the vintage van? As these are obviously older, the people of London and other cities may never get a chance to see these beautiful creations. The barrier of the M25 is the limit, the fortress wall, in which entering with a van or vehicle older than requirements will land you a massive £100 fine.  As if we didn’t feel watched enough my electronic eyes.
We have interviewed Robert, Owner of Ice Cream Company, Robert’s Ices:

How bigger impact do you think the new LEZ law will have upon your business?
“Well, a very big impact. Many Ice cream vans will be going out of business because of this, which is a shame because I love this industry. It’s what I have grown up with and its what I know best.”
Are there solutions to the new LEZ laws?
There is a filter that can be bought, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which firstly cost a good £2500+VAT along with the constant cleaning and maintenance. But, I know a few people who have had these installed and from what they say, these filters do not even work properly. So we pay all this money and go through the hassle of having them fitted and certified (for even more money) and then we still pay the £100 per day fine because the filters fail. Luckily for us we only keep vans much newer than the LEZ limit so we do not need these filters.
Do you think many other businesses will be affected as much as the ice cream industry?
Of course, so many businesses of all kinds use transit vans, the work horse of Britain as my father calls them. So many will not even be able to work in London anymore. Not everyone can afford to buy new Vans. What is very annoying though, is the black taxis of London, they run on worse emissions than ice cream vans yet they are excused from fines or having to make adjustments to their cars. In my opinion they shouldn’t be allowed to do it.
One final question. What do you feel is the future for Ice Cream Vans?
Well, all I know is here at Roberts Ices we are going to carry on as we are. Keep doing the right thing, serving a good ice cream and value for money and continue to provide that family run business service. I think if the Ice Cream industry is to survive, more Vans need to provide a good service, many times we have had to step in to save a wedding because another company hasn’t turned up as they have found something they feel more profitable or something. Its things like this which really harm our industry but were not all like that. We run our vans properly like a catering company should, health and hygiene is first, constant cleaning and risk assessments. Fresh food all year round served with a smile. Of course we do some street rounds which we build up many loyal customers and also gain many friends too. But who knows, the future of Ice Cream Vans is never certain, things could get better as promised by the current political party.  We shall see.

After the interview we had the chance to sample some of Roberts Ices fresh whippy and very nice is was. It is nice to see a clean and well kept Ice Cream Van which I would feel safe to buy ice cream for my kids from.
Ice Cream Vans are now not a thing of the summer, but an all year round industry. Forced out into the snow and Ice by these council rules and regulations, Ice cream traders are dressing in many layers to trade just to make ends meet. Ice Cream vans were always a happy place, and we can only hope they continue to come down are streets serving that rare treat. It is not just London either, most cities around the UK are now considering these Low emission zone rules.  Many more small businesses and industries may be hurt deeply in times to come.
Supermarkets are too what puts great strain on the ice cream vans, bringing out ice lollies and ice cream now even sorbet at prices ice cream vans just can’t challenge. But there is something the supermarkets can’t do, and that is traditional soft whippy ice cream and that’s what I look forward to every summer.

Our thoughts and wishes out to Whitney Houston who Dies age 48

Roberts Ices would like to share a moment to remember the fantastic and much loved music artist Whitney Houston. A highly inspirational woman, who voice amazed millions with its power and talent. Of course highly remembered from the film "The bodyguard" where Whitney's big hit "I will always love you" which won the soundtrack album of the year award. Our thoughts are with the Whitney's family and friends on this difficult time for them.
Whitney Houston died in LA age 48, on the eve of music's biggest night - the grammies.
Her singing began in church, until she moved onto backing singing for such stars as Jermaine Jackson.
Although Whitney's career wasn't at its peak lately, she was still a much loved and idolised person and will remain so.

CSPI Attack Ben and Jerrys

Consumer watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is calling out popular ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's for using artificial and chemically-altered ingredients in its "All Natural" premium ice creams. According to CSPI at least 90 percent of the flavors used in "All Natural" Ben & Jerry's ice cream are not actually natural.

Some of these ingredients include corn syrup, alkalized cocoa, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, vanillin, maltodextrin and dextrose, all of which involve some type of chemical processing or are simply artificial. Alkalized cocoa, for instance, involves a chemical process that changes cocoa's natural flavor, texture and chemical structure, as well as eliminates some of its acidity and healthy antioxidant content. And vanillin is just an artificial version of vanilla.

"Ben & Jerry's sylvan labels notwithstanding, these ingredients come from the factory, not the farm. And slapping an 'all natural' label on the products certainly implies that the products are top quality and deserve to fetch a higher price," said Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of CSPI. "It's a stretch to call any of [these ingredients] 'natural'."

CSPI has been after Ben & Jerry's, which is now part of the consumer product conglomerate Unilever, since 2002 over deceptive labeling. After bringing these problems to the attention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at that time, CSPI has watched the quality of Ben & Jerry's products get even worse

So now the group is now urging Ben & Jerry's to clean up its act and fix its deceptive labeling or else face legal charges to be brought before both the FDA and state attorneys general.
